Loma Vista 1st Grade Presents
Loma Vista Salute to America!

Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock at MCB
The 2nd graders at Mary Casey Black Elementary did an outstanding job performing the African folktale "Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock".
Rockets and Robots at MCB
Captain Bob shared great stories about the space program, rockets and robots at an assembly for students at Mary Casey Black Elementary on Monday. A big thank you to the BUSD Education Foundation and the PTA. Due to their support, MCB was able to have two assemblies!
AMS Band Visits Chico State
The Adams Middle School Band, under the direction of Lindsay Kellogg, recently went to California State University, Chico where they enjoyed a clinic with Dr. Royce Tevis. They went to lunch at the Madison Bear Garden followed by small group sectionals and a campus tour. Following the tour, the members of the Bidwell and Marsh Jr. High School bands joined them for a joint rehearsal. The students then performed in a collaboration concert with the other two middle schools and the CSUC Wind Ensemble. It was an exchange experience they will never forget! Saturday, students were able to enjoy a fun day with friends at Six Flags.
Parent Workshop and Information Night
On Thursday, April 13th, at 6pm, the Brentwood Union School District is sponsoring a parent workshop and information night for immigrant families. There have been a number of questions and concerns that have been raised as a result of recent national and local events. We believe that the best way to address those questions and concerns is through information and education.

Thanks to the participants and committee members who have made the annual Turkey Trot for Schools a great success! The funds raised have been used to purchase the pictured equipment and so much more!! Our students are lucky to have new equipment in their PE classes due to the generosity and support of our community.

Krey Student Takes 6th Place in County Spelling Bee
Sanjeev Putta participated in the Contra Costa County Spelling Bee competition and took 6th place overall. He is the Krey Elementary Spelling Bee Champion for both 4th and 5th grades. Congratulations Sanjeev!
Krey Students Visit Westmont
Mrs. Berry's 3rd grade class visits Westmont monthly. This month, students sang St. Patrick's Day songs and played math graphing games with Lucky Charms cereal. Go Krey Coyotes!

Adams Middle School Principal Michael Wood was honored as ACSA Delta Region Middle School Principal of the Year and Mary Casey Black Principal Liz Ybarra was honored as Delta Region Elementary School Principal of the Year. Brentwood is fortunate to have such talented school leaders.
Edna Hill Celebrates Spelling Bee Champions
The annual spelling bee began with 24 of the 37 students who moved on from the second round spelling bee. The judges were; Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Kemper, Ms. Narez, Mrs. Richie and Mrs. Brown. Mrs. Allen read the words and definitions and ran the Spelling Bee along with Mrs. Brown. Dr. Hallberg was there as our administrator for the evening. Students wrote their words on whiteboards through 30 rounds of words that students were able to study. During these rounds, students could miss 3 words before they had to sit out. We next moved on to single elimination rounds. The words in these next rounds were additional words from the Scripps Pronouncer Guide, but the students did not have a list of these words to study. After the word “conducive,” there was one student left. Cierra had to spell her championship word correctly and she would be the 1st place winner. Her word was “ferocity.” She spelled it correctly! Next, the remaining students had to compete for second place. After the word “municipality,” we had one student left. Kassandra then had to spell her championship word correctly. Kassandra prevailed and spelled “flammable” correctly to win second place!
American Music Through Time
Fifth Graders at Mary Casey Black Elementary did an amazing performance of American Music Through Time. Family and friends enjoyed the patriotic music and history.
Contra Costa County Honor Jazz Band
Adams Middle School jazz band students participated in the Contra Costa County Honor Jazz Band at Stanley Middle School in Lafayette. Students auditioned in January and were chosen to participate in this honor group with other outstanding jazz musicians in the county. They performed a concert this past weekend. We are very excited to have students advancing in the area of jazz. Congratulations Mina, Alex Taesan and Rafael!
Pennies for Patients
Bristow students raised $2,600 for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through the Pennies for Patients program. Great job Bristow!

Congratulations to Garin Elementary (Problem 1), Marsh Creek Elementary (Problem 2), Bristow and Edna Hill Middle School (Problem 3), Pioneer Elementary and Edna Hill Middle (Problem 4) and Brentwood Elementary, Edna Hill and Adams Middle Schools (Problem 5). BMS Desire to Inspire
Bristow’s Gather in the Gym just celebrated their character theme, “Desire to Inspire” by holding an Inspirational Pageant! Each advisory class chose a person they found inspirational and the staff and students dressed up as that character to parade around in a typical pageant style.
AMS Spelling Bee Winners 2017
For the first time in AMS history, eight bee candidates exhausted all of the possible spelling words leading to a sudden death round. Garin Spelling Bee Winners
Garin School held its annual Spelling Bee on Monday, January 30th. Eighteen students competed in a stiff competition that lasted almost two hours, a new school record! In the end, it was Aiden Wells, 4th grader who came in 1st Place. Lori Brown, a 5th grader was the proud runner up.
The county spelling bell will take place on March 25, 2017. Garin Elementary is proud of our two terrific spellers!!

Kindergarten students in Ms. Kendall's classroom at Loma Vista School celebrated the 100th day of school with zero necklaces.
CMEA Honor Band and Choir
Sixteen outstanding musicians from Adams, Bristow and Edna Hill Middle Schools took part in the CMEA annual conference honor band or choir.
The students were selected and nominated by their teachers and then chosen by the CMEA board to participate in the honor group. Students attended the honor band or choir all day Friday with rehearsals and returned on Saturday morning for more rehearsals followed by a formal concert of all of their music.Their teachers are so proud of how these students represented BUSD and the music programs in our district!
All three BUSD middle schools participated in the recent Basketball Jamboree.

Motivational speaker, Keith Hawkins, came to Bristow to inspire his audience to be better people, to be the change they so desire, and to learn, grow, and thrive in life.
Extreme Science Magic Show
Students at Brentwood Elementary had the opportunity recently to attend the Extreme Science Magic Show. This assembly was funded by the BUSD Education Foundation to promote extended science opportunities in our schools.
Measure B Funds At Work
The first Measure B project of the year is underway at Ron Nunn School. An expanded driveway will reduce traffic, loop time and will improve safety. Thank you Brentwood!
EHMS Winter Concert
Student musicians from Edna Hill Middle School performed for family and friends at the recent Winter Concert.
AMS Winter Concert
AMS 6th grade band, jazz band, 7th and 8th grade band and choir performed on December 20th. It was a huge success and featured small ensembles, students playing on pots/pans and glasses. Mr. Wood, principal joined the musicians for the narration of Twas the Night Before Christmas.

Farewell Denise Barrios
Board President, Carlos Sanabria presented Fiscal Services Coordinator, Denise Barrios with a certificate in honor of her retirement after 22 years of dedicated service! We wish you well in your next chapter, we will miss you!!
At the December 15th Board Meeting, Board Clerk, Scott Dudek gave the Oath of Office to Trustees, James Cushing and Carlos Sanabria. Both were re-elected to four-year terms. The Board selected Trustee, Scott Dudek to serve as the new Board President and Trustee Johnny Rodriguez will take over as the Clerk for the 2017 calendar year.
Thank You Brentwood Art Society!
A big thank you to Dan Berns and the Brentwood Art Society who presented a check for $7,322 to BUSD Superintendent Dana Eaton for the Art Docent program at the December Board Meeting. The Brentwood Art Society raises money through the Art, Wine and Jazz festival held each year. The Art Docent program provides art history and instruction at all of our elementary schools.
RNS KC Club at Summerset
Tonight was another amazing night of spreading good cheer with our Summerset neighbors. Our Ron Nunn School led by the KC Club sang carols throughout Summerset. We ended the evening at the Clubhouse where the Summerset 1 board presented our school with $1500. What a blessing to be in partnership with our neighbors!! It is always such a positive joyful night for all involved. Thank you to Laurie Ford and Monique Wirkus for continuing to lead this amazing program.
MCB Principal for the Day
Jenny a 3rd grader at MCB, has found her calling! She served as Principal for the Day and did a terrific job. Her duties included: reading to kindergarteners, handing out Hoot Loot at recess, helping students with class work and attending a lesson planning meeting with 5th grade teachers. Jenny is an excellent principal!

Marsh Creek School celebrated it's 12th Posada with fun games, delicious food, great entertainment, and a special visitor from up North!
WEB at AMS
Adams hosted its first WEB club meeting at lunch this past Friday in Katie Humann’s classroom. WEB, which stands for Where Everybody Belongs, brings together students with special needs and their general education peers. Adams students Avery Bredwell and Ambria Gee launched the club this term and the first meeting was extremely well attended. Students got acquainted with the club rules and purpose in the big circle and then broke into smaller groups to engage in conversation.

Fourth and fifth grade students participated in "Hour of Code" during Computer Science Week, December 5th-11th.
EHMS Donates to Canned Food Drive
Students in Mrs. de Fremery's advisory class brought in 575 cans for the BRCC food drive. They calculated that if they built their pyramid with all of their donations, it would be 11.5' tall at the peak. Way to go EHMS!
AMS Jazz Band
The AMS Jazz Band participated in the Delta Jazz Festival. They received high scores in all categories and placed 2nd out of all of the middle school jazz bands. Three student soloists were also awarded outstanding soloist awards: Rafael Leria, Isaac Ordonez and Natalie Rodriguez. Congratulations to all of these talented Adams Middle School students!
BMS Determination For Success
Bristow’s DFS (Determination For Success) and GATE students were given the opportunity to go to San Jose State University in November. The students had a tour of the campus guided by a college student, they got to visit the book store and eat in the student union. We will be planning another trip to a college in the spring. The goal is to visit colleges and experience what it is like to be on a college campus. Go to college to make your dreams come true.
Brentwood Elementary Kids Against Hunger
Brentwood Elementary did an awesome job packing food for the Kids Against Hunger program. They teamed with the FOR Club from Bristow MS in order to make a difference for people in need.

As a silent auction donation, Officer Rucker donated his time to have lunch with a group of Marsh Creek students. He ate lunch with these students and even had time for a game of Candy Land. Another great example of what an awesome community we have!
BUSD Education Foundation Hoedown
The BUSD Education Foundation held their Hoedown event at the Brentwood Community Center to raise funds for Art and Science! A good time was had by all.
Walk Thru American Revolution
Patrick Henry is accused of treason in Walk Thru American Revolution in Mrs. Delgado's 5th grade class at Marsh Creek Elementary School. All 5th grade students studied for their role and participated in this program that makes American History come alive.

Kids Helping Kids at RNS
The KC club and Room 15 at Ron Nunn School raised $402.69 trick or treating for UNICEF. That's enough to purchase a bicycle to deliver medicine to children in refugee camps, provide 35 malnourished children with life saving nutrition for 2 days, plus provide many children with clean water for a year! Way to go Ron Nunn students!!
Colonial Day At MCB
The 5th graders at Mary Casey Black Elementary became the teachers during the Colonial Day Event. They had to research trades and crafts during that time period. They created informational displays, dressed in period costumes and presented facts from their research to all of the younger students at the school. It was an incredible experience. Go Fifth Grade Owls!

A Patriotic Salute to America
Brentwood Elementary third graders presented “A Patriotic Salute to America” yesterday to both students and parents. This performance included our nation’s most patriotic songs and a photo slide show of our students’ family members who have served in our armed forces. Our third graders learned a lot about patriotism and honoring our country’s veterans.
Free Homework Help!
The Brentwood Library is providing Free "drop in" homework help on Tuesdays from 4:00-6:00pm. Help is available in the Brentwood Community Center on the 2nd Floor in the room next to the elevator. Subjects covered include: Math (K-Algebra 2); Reading/English; Science; and History. Homework help is available on days when school is in session.
AMS GATE Field Trip
Adams MS GATE students went on a field trip to Intuitive Surgical. The company manufactures surgical robots. Students toured the facility and were trained to use the robots. Students practices placing tiny rubber bands onto targets.
AMS Presents Willy Wonka Jr.
Adams Middle School premiere of Willy Wonka Jr. It is an amazing show led by Ms. Kennealy with over 90 students!
Dia de los Muertos at Garin
Garin English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) set up displays honoring the dead for Dia de los Muertos. Students visited the displays and then enjoyed one of three traditional desserts served by Ms. Norma and Mrs. Biggs.
Area Festival Performance
Students from Adams MS, Bristow MS and Heritage HS did a terrific job at the area festival.
AMS Music Booster Event
The Adams MS Music Boosters held the 6th Annual Pumpkin and Pancakes fundraiser. This was the largest year ever, serving nearly 1,100 guests. The Boosters partnered with the local Rotary and Lyons Clubs who cooked and donated all of the pancakes. Nearly 300 musicians from the 6th grade band, 7th/8th grade band, and jazz band performed at the event. It was a huge success!
MCB Students Shine at VCRC Event
Angie and Genesis Baeza, students from Mary Casey Black Elementary, practiced their public speaking skills on Saturday, October 22nd. They were part of a community building event at Village Community Resource Center (VCRC). It was a celebration of how VCRC has grown its programs and supported many local students and their families.

Thank you to the Brentwood Rotary Club who annually donate a dictionary to every single 3rd grade student in our school district! The first word the Rotarians had the students look up... "service". Many of our outstanding students will grow up to serve their community as well!
Congratulations Juliet Simens!
Congratulations to Pioneer Elementary teacher Juliet Simens on being honored as the Brentwood Union School District Teacher of the Year. The Contra Costa County Teacher of the Year dinner was held last week and honored teachers across the county. It was an inspiring night, full of professionals who repeatedly reminded all in attendance why teaching and teachers need to be celebrated and respected for the positive impact they have each an every day. Juliet represented the district very well. Congratulations Juliet!
Bristow Science Camp Rocks
Bristow attended Science Camp the week of Labor Day! Students, teachers, and over 40 parent chaperones had a fantastic time taking science classes during the day. At night students watched skits from naturalists, went on a solo night hike, and enjoyed an old-fashioned barn dance.

Tiara's Act of Kindness
Tiara, a 6th grade student at Adams Middle School enlisted the help of other students to collect items for students in local foster care. Congratulations Tiara! Your Act of Kindness will certainly make a difference for others!
Bristow Kids Against Hunger Event
Students at Bristow Middle School packed 14,680 meals that will be going to the Manteca area, Haiti, and the Philippines. Way to go Bears!
Brentwood Library Closure
The Brentwood Library will be closed for two weeks starting at 6:00pm on Saturday, October 22nd. The library will re-open on Monday, November 7th at a temporary location in the City of Brentwood Community Center, 35 Oak Street. The hours at the temporary location will be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9am-5pm and on Tuesday, from Noon-8:00pm.

National Geographic Geography Bee
Edna Hill Middle School recently held the National Geographic Geography Bee. The top three winners are: (left to right) Remington Freeman - 3rd place, Colby Calabrese - 1st place, Brody Moreno-McClure - 2nd place. Also pictured is Mr. Philip Rodriguez, facilitator of the National Geography Bee.
Colby will take a state entry exam later this year and will be in the running to travel to Washington DC for the final National Geographic Society Geography Bee. The winner of the National Bee receives a $50,000 scholarship and a trip to an exotic location paid for by the National Geographic Society. Good luck Colby!
Down Syndrome Connection Presentatioin
Eli and Jennifer Cooper from the Down Syndrome Connection shared his book "Through Eli's Eyes" with students at Loma Vista. Eli shared that down syndrome is a part of him but not all of him. Students shared ways they can support one another, be a good friend, and how students are more alike than they are different.
