New Student Meet & Greet at AMS

Counselor, Lauren Todoroff organized a "Meet and Greet" for the 99 students at Adams MS who are new to the district. Small groups of these students met in the library, engaged in an icebreaker activity that encouraged interaction with each other. Information was also shared about student counseling services available at the school. The session ended with tips for making new friends. Students who met at this gathering have been observed sitting together at lunch having made new friend.

They held a special "fire drill" and sang Happy Birthday to the former Garin Principal and Board Member.  The Library at Loma Vista School is named in his honor.  Happy 80th!

The district appreciates our ongoing relationship this fabulous group. This year, they delivered 144 backpacks to make sure students have what they need to begin the school year. We are very grateful for their kindness and generosity.

The Brentwood Library Foundation is hosting a Gala Event on Saturday, September 24th at the Brentwood Community Center.  If you would like more information please click here.

"Catch A Special Thrill"

Assemblymember Jim Frazier is partnering with the C.A.S.T. For Kids Foundation among others to host the "Catch A Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.) for Kids fishing event" at the Brannan Island State Recreation Area in Rio Vista for children with special needs on Saturday, June 11, 2016.  The check-in time is 7:00am to 7:30am, the even runs from 7:00am to 1:00pm.

 

Each participating child will receive a plaque with a photograph of the child and their Boat Captain.  They will also receive a free rod, reel, and tackle box to take home.  Reservations are on a first-come/first-served basis.  To register a child, go to: https://www.regonline.com/Register/Checkin.aspx?

AMS #icanhelp Spirit Day


Adams Middle School had a #icanhelp sprit day this Wednesday and welcomed students to campus with a High Five Highway! The leadership class started the highway and as students and staff went through the highway, they joined the line. It was a great way to start the day with positivity and get students and staff smiling in the morning!

BMS CPR Training.jpgIn conjunction with AMR, over 2,000 middle school students were trained in the basics of CPR. Compression only CPR is easy to learn and has the ability to save lives while waiting for paramedics.

The City of Brentwood Public Works Department held a fun and educational Public Works Open House for our district 3rd graders on May 17th. This is a fun-filled day of learning where students get exposed to science, engineering and other behind the scenes work that is done to keep our city well-maintained and safe. We are proud of the partnership we have with the City to bring this program to students.

Matt Dailey to be 2016-17 Garin Principal

The Brentwood Union School District is thrilled to announce that Matthew Dailey was selected by the BUSD Board of Education last night as the next Principal of Garin Elementary. 

 

Mr. Dailey is currently the vice principal at Freedom High School. Previously he was a teacher and assistant principal for Adams Middle School in Brentwood. Mr. Dailey is well known for building positive relationships with students, staff and parents. He is highly visible on campus.

 

BUSD is proud to have Mr. Dailey returning home to Brentwood.

The 7th grade Language Arts classes at Bristow Middle School are reading the novel, The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton.    This week they were given a special presentation by BUSD’s  Board of Education member, Johnny Rodriguez, who came to talk with students in relation to the focus question of the novel:  “What Does it Mean to Belong?”.  He told students of his own involvement with gangs and how he overcame many obstacles and now has his own mentorship program for kids who are struggling with poor choices.  The kids really appreciated his openness and honesty throughout the presentation.

The Brentwood Union School District is proud to announce that the Contra Costa Reading Association (CCRA) has chosen to honor Marsh Creek Elementary Principal Teresa D'Alfonsi with the prestigious International Literacy Association (ILA) and the California Reading Association (CRA) "Celebrate Literacy Award." Mrs. D'Alfonsi will be honored at a dinner on May 26th. Congratulations Teresa!

Adams MS Students Honored

CJSF Marion Huhn Award winners 2016.jpg
In 1989, the California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) Honor Award was renamed in remembrance of the former CJSF Registrar, Marian Huhn. The Marian Huhn Memorial Award recognizes junior high school students for their academic excellence and service to the school and community. CJSF chapters may nominate top two students for the Marian Huhn Award. Nominated candidates submit a packet including letters of recommendation and a personal statement. Five students from each region receiving a $250 award. Adams Middle School is proud to announce that our two nominees, Rylee Cagle and Mateo Pena received this honor on Saturday, April 23, in San Jose. Congratulations Rylee and Mateo!

Loma Vista Presents

Loma Vista’s First Graders did an amazing job singing about all they have learned this year.  They learned songs in 3 different languages and each class worked on memorizing a special poem.  The Loma Vista First Grade teachers want to thank Bristow Productions for capturing the special night on video . Thanks to Menchies, families were able to stay and celebrate their first graders hard work with a yummy treat.

Norma Arreguin CCCOE Employee of the Year

The Brentwood School District is proud to announce that Garin School para-professional Norma Arreguin has been selected as the Contra Costa County Office of Education Employee of the year in the para-professional/instructional aide division. Ms. Arreguin is a long time Garin School contributor. She has been a campus supervisor, and instructional aide performing intervention services, a classroom volunteer, translator and District Employee Child Care Assistant. She volunteers to serve on many committees and has been a trainer for Garin bilingual parents. Ms. Arreguin leads the organization of the “Day of the Child” multi-cultural event every year at Garin Elementary.  She always is focused on helping others and always has a smile on her face. Outside of her work at Garin School, she continues to provide help and support for families in need.  An amazing example was when she heard of a parent with a child at Children's Hospital in Oakland, she drove that parent to Oakland every night and served as an advocate in ensuring her child received the best and most appropriate care.

 

Ms. Arreguin will be honored at a reception in April at the Contra Costa County Office of Education.  She has also been advanced to the state level for consideration of recognition.

Mad Science at MCB

Mary Casey Black students and staff were amazed by the Mad Science presenters!  They even involved the teachers in their experiments. Thanks to the BUSD Education Foundation; MCB was able to have two Mad Science Assemblies.

BUSD teams advance to World Odyssey of the Mind Finals


Over 4,000 students competed at UC Riverside after winning regional competitions throughout the state.  First and second place teams travel to the World Finals in Iowa.  BUSD was one of the top Odyssey of the Mind participants in the state with ten teams that ascended to the state finals after winning at the regional competition.

 

The Brentwood Elementary No Cycle/Recycle Team, led by coach Susan Wallace, placed 2nd in the state in the mechanical/vehicle problem.  Teams design, build and operate vehicles of various size and with various power sources.  Sometimes they drive the vehicles, and sometimes the vehicles perform tasks, such as overcoming obstacles or visiting other "countries" to retrieve artifacts. Members of that team include Katharina Wallace, Kevin Straigt, Kaelyn Finnigan, Tony Trapanese, Trenton Taylor, Hayden Cooper and Zack Johnson.

 

The Pioneer Elementary Something Fishy Team, led by coach PJ Dodgson, placed 2nd in the performance problem.  In this problem, teams present performances that revolve around a specific theme and incorporate required elements.  Members of the team include Peyton Armatis, Jordyn Davies, Andrew Dodgson, James Eaton, Kaida Hou, and Elly Longoria.

AMS Band at Disneyland


Students from Adams MS traveled to Disneyland over March break. The Jazz Band performed in the Hollywood Backlot Studio at California Adventure. The Symphonic Band also performed in that same location the following day. Students also participated in the Disney Recording Arts Workshop. There were 126 students and parents representing Adams MS - It was a great experience!

The Brentwood Union School District is thrilled to announce that Pioneer Elementary School principal, Samy D’Amico, has been selected as a co-recipient of LMC’s 2016 César Chávez “East County Educator Award.” The César Chávez East County Educator Award recognizes a member of the educational community who demonstrates the qualities of César Chávez and a commitment to student success and equity, particularly for students of color and those from low-income families. He will be honored at an awards ceremony on Friday, April 1, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on the LMC campus.

2016 Teacher of the Year - Juliet Simens


Juliet Simens is currently a 4th grade teacher at Pioneer Elementary. She has been a district employee for 15 years, she has also taught 1st and 3rd grades. Juliet is the type of teacher who takes every opportunity to receive additional training that will help her students succeed. She has been a leader in piloting new programs like Reading Wonders, and was an early user of chromebooks in her classroom. She has served on both site and district committees, such as the school Leadership Team, the district Academic vocabulary committee and the district Technology Advisory Committee.  Besides using all of this learning to support her students, Juliet is a constant collaborator and supporter of her peers as they too work with new materials and strategies. She also has accepted student teachers into her room, providing guidance and support. Juliet truly cares about each and every student that comes in to her class and wants what is best for them.

Congratulations to all of the Brentwood Union School District teams that participated in the Odyssey of the Mind Delta Regional Tournament this past Saturday.  Fourteen BUSD teams took home a medal.  The 1st and 2nd place teams for each division qualify for the state finals at UC Riverside in April.  BUSD will be represented by 12 teams at the state finals!  Congratulations to everyone.

AMS Science Fair 2016

All 7th and 8th grade students prepared projects for the Adams MS Science Fair Night.  The gymnasium was filled with over 700 presentation boards.  The highlight of the science fair was all of the student work.  However, the presence of some astronomers from the Mt. Diablo Astronomical Society who brought a range of high-powered telescopes for students and parents to use was an extra bonus.

Mary Casey Black Elementary hosted another terrific Family Math Night.  A big thank you to Mary Black, Deb Burns, Katie Cuevas, Amy Galbraith and Kate Ghilarducci for their efforts to make this a special night.  The families received instruction on how to use the math games that they received and an explanation on the theory behind the games.  The MCB families now have more resources to support math literacy at home.

The third grade classes at Mary Casey Black Elementary performed Musical Brentwood last night in front of family and friends. The third grade teachers taught the songs, which illustrate the history of Brentwood. The performance ends with a slide show of pictures of Brentwood comparing common landmarks from the past and present. Everyone is so proud of these 3rd graders!

Guide Dogs Visit Garin School

Thanks to Garin librarian, Kylee Tong, "Guide Dogs for the Blind" visited Garin to share how they raise and train dogs to donate to people who are blind.  Mrs. Tong works with this organization and is a dog trainer herself.  

Weather Station at Ron Nunn School

Garin Spelling Bee Winners!

Garin Elementary School held its annual Spelling Bee on January 29th.  There were student representatives from each 4th and 5th grade class, 18 total, competing for the top two spots.  At the end of the day, it was Lily Costanza from Mrs. Agpalo's 5th grade class who walked away the winner.  The runner up was Nick Brady from Mrs. Ostlund's 4th grade class.  All participants did a fantastic job. Lily will be moving on to the county spelling bee in the spring.  Congratulations Lily and Nick!!

Fun in the Kitchen

Today was the 100th day of school!  Staff from the Ron Nunn School kitchen wore special hats to celebrate.  Carmen & Ginger make school lunches special!

Adams Middle School top spellers are (from left) Jon Sulit - 3rd place, Kaitlyn Le - 1st place and Tammi Sison - 2nd place.  Kaitlyn will represent AMS at the Contra Costa County Spelling Bee on March 26th in Walnut Creek.  Great work spellers!

Brentwood Rockin' Jump Donates Chromebooks


Due to the generosity of the Brentwood Rockin' Jump, students in Mrs. Gandara's class have 13 Chromebooks and 1 laptop to use in class!  Thank you owners Shelley & Mark and Manager Dawn for your generosity.  If you are at Rockin' Jump, you may want to thank them in person.

Students from Bristow and Pioneer worked together to pack over 15,000 meals for hungry children overseas!  An amazing effort by everyone.

Brentwood Regional Community Chest

Brentwood staff, students and community members work together to pack boxes for families in need.  Thank you to everyone for their participation. BRCC was able to provide food and gifts for over 500 families!

First grade students from Brentwood Elementary performed the musical "Let It Snow" before an enthusiastic crowd!  Their good wishes for snow in California seem to be working!

Pet Smart Donates Stuffed Animals

Students at Marsh Creek Elementary are shown with their stuffed animals donated by Pet Smart.  Pet Smart presented stuffed animals to every TK-2nd grade student!  A great big THANK YOU to Pet Smart for their generosity!

CMEA Honor Band and Choir

Nine BUSD music students participated in the CMEA Conference Honor Band and Choir over the weekend.  The students were from all three of our district middle schools.  Congratulations to all of these talented students!

BUSD is proud to announce that we have three Outstanding Educators representing Adams, Bristow and Edna Hill Middle Schools as nominees for the California League of Middle Schools Region 4 Educator of the Year!  Congratulations to Tamara Reed (BMS); Joseph Thornhill (AMS) and Polly Gallagher (EHMS).  The nominees were honored at a dinner at St. Mary's College.

Mary Casey Black's 2nd graders did a fantastic performance of Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock.  Family and friends in attendance were very proud!

BMS Collects Toys for BRCC

Bristow Middle School students once again won "The Giving Tree Trophy" for collecting the most toys and food items for the Brentwood Regional Community Chest.  Bristow students and staff collected 4,163 cans, toys and coats.  Adams MS was a close second with 3,575 and Edna Hill MS collected over 2,000 items.  All three middle schools collected 9,738 items in total for local needy families. Great job everyone!

Delta Strummers Perform at Garin

Mother's of Brentwood Bring Christmas to BUSD Families

The Mother's of Brentwood (MOB) delivered gifts for 8 families, one family from each elementary site, within our district. They provided a multi-page questionnaire to each family to determine size, need and interests and then shopped with those facts in mind.  The Mother's of Brentwood wanted to insure that these families have a very Merry Christmas.  A big THANK YOU to this wonderful group of ladies for their ongoing support of our students and families in our community!

Bristow Students Helping Others...

Bristow MS students in Mr. McNamara's class were exploring how poverty affects communities.  After reading "Bud, Not Buddy" a story that takes place during the Great Depression and addresses poverty and homelessness throughout the novel, students got involved to collect socks, hats, blankets, toothbrushes and other items that people living on the street could use.  Items are being put into bags along with Christmas cards and will be distributed to homeless people on December 22nd.

 

In addition, Video Productions was able to contribute funds to the Homeless Connection/Kids Helping Kids from donations received at their charity video showcase that raised about $400 for several charities, including some serving the homeless.  Great job Bristow!

Accolades for Superintendent Dana Eaton

Future "coders" at Edna Hill MS in Mrs.Gonzalez class coding video games during "hour of code".  The are learning to code through Star Wars, Minecraft and Disney's Frozen.

Garin School's Winter Concert

Garin's 5th grade students performed a Holiday Concert for everyone to enjoy.  All students had an opportunity to attend the two daytime performances followed by an evening performance for families.  Garin is very grateful for Mrs. Hill and the talented band students. Holiday Cheer filled the room as the students played!

East County Unitarian Neighborhood Group & Friends Donate Books to Garin

Several members of the East County Unitarian Neighborhood Group gathered for some holiday fun.  Instead of exchanging gifts, they brought books to donate to the Garin School Library.  Their generous book donation value exceed $830!  Due to this group's generosity, students will have many new books to read in their library.  Thank you!  

AMS Jazz Band Competes at Jazz Festival

The AMS Jazz Band competed in the Jazz Festival at Delta Valley College in Stockton over the past weekend.  Adams received top ratings for their performance and was also given the Outstanding Soloist Award for Jyrhed Suriba's trumpet solo "My Funny Valentine". It was a fantastic festival and the students did a great job representing Adams Middle School and the Brentwood Union School District!

On December 4th, Marsh Creek Elementary held their Posada event.  This annual tradition is a wonderful way for the Marsh Creek Community to come together to welcome the holiday season.

Bristow Staff Support Movember

Eighteen male Bristow staff members supported Movember, which is growing our your “Mo=mustache”, in an effort to bring awareness to everyone about maintaining good physical and mental health.  The Bristow staff included, Officer Rucker, support staff, administrators, and teachers.  Bristow students watched the staff members grow out their “Mo’s” for all of Movember while in advisory the students talked about important ways to continue and improve their own well being!

Turkey Trot 2015


The 2nd Annual Turkey Trot was a great success!  There were over 1,000 participants this year, doubling the number from last year. Over $30,000 was raised to support the Brentwood and Liberty Union School Districts.  A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make this a great success...  

No Turkey for Perky

Kindergarten students at Mary Casey Black Elementary did a great job at their "No Turkey for Perky" musical performance.  Thank you to the amazing parents who helped prepare the props and background set, the fantastic students with their talented singing voices and the teachers and support staff who made all of this possible.  Poor Perky, still no turkey!
