Jury Duty Process

Jury Duty

Employees are required to provide documentation of reporting to the courthouse to serve jury duty.  Acceptable documentation includes any notice from the court signed by an agent of the court.  A jury duty summons is not acceptable documentation.

The recommended process for when receiving a summons for jury duty is

  1. Input an absence with Jury Duty as the reason as soon as you receive the jury duty summons.

    1. In the “Notes to Substitute” indicate that the position may be canceled if you are not required to report for jury duty.

  2. Inform your supervisor and site or department secretary that you have received a jury duty summons for the specific date as soon as you receive the jury duty summons.

  3. Call the court as directed on the summons, usually the night before.

  4. If the call to the court indicates you do not have to report the following day, cancel the sub and report to work.

  5. If the call to the court indicates you need to call in the late morning for possible reporting in the afternoon,

    1. Cancel the sub and report to work.

      1. If possible, when canceling the sub contact him/her to see if he/she would be available midday if you have to report to the courthouse after lunch.

    2. Notify your supervisor and site or department secretary that you need to call the court midday.

    3. Call the court midday as required.

      1. If supervision of students is needed to call the court midday, contact your site secretary and/or supervisor to assist you.

      2. If you must report to the courthouse, notify your supervisor and site or department secretary.  They will work out substitute coverage as needed.

  6. If you report to jury duty, it is suggested that you decline payment for reporting or serving as a juror other than reimbursement for mileage.

    1. Any compensation you receive other than mileage is required to be signed over to the District.
