Service Delivery Options for School Age Students
Continuum of Services
The Right Fit
The Brentwood Union School District offers a range of classroom placement options based on the unique needs of each student. For most students, that means full time attendance in a general education classroom. For students who are eligible and require Special Education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), there is a continuum of potential placements. Classroom placement is determined by the IEP team.
General Education
Typical students take all general education classes with their peers and progress on track to complete a regular high school diploma.
Health Plans
Any student, whether eligible for Special Education or not, may have a Health Plan due to a current health condition that must be addressed during school hours. Health Plans are developed by the District Nurse in collaboration the student’s Physician and Family.
504 Plans in General Education
Certain students have disabilities that require accommodations, but not special education. Please contact your classroom teacher or school principal if your child is struggling in school and they can help determine whether a 504 plan may be appropriate.
Instructional Support Programs (ISP)
Students who receive this type of service spend most of their time in general education classes and get targeted academic, social skills and / or communication instruction. They may also receive related services.
Academic Support Learning Center (ASLC)
These classes are aimed at students who spend more than 50% of their time in general education classes but need more time to master foundational academic skills. There is intensive academic instruction which is differentiated for multiple skill levels and a focus on social skills and communication.
Social Communication Learning Lab
This is a separate space at Bristow Middle School where students can go to work on increasing their emotional regulation skills in order to remain in their general education classes. This lab offers consistent Instructional Aide support and is staffed throughout the day by special education teachers.
Social Communication Learning Center (SCLC)
This class targets communication, social skills, and self regulation while providing a less stimulating environment where students can complete grade level assignments. Students have seats in general education classes.
Counseling Enriched Classroom (CEC)
For students who are working on grade level academic material but struggle to participate appropriately in a classroom environment, these classes focus on social skills development, self-regulation, and communication while providing a smaller learning environment and academic support.
Special Day Class - Learning Support (SDC - LS)
This class is aimed at students who require intensive academic skill development through individual and group work, social skills, and communication training and spend more than 50% of their time in a self contained learning environment.
Special Day Class - Functional Skills (SDC - FS)
This class uses some Direct Trial Training (DTT) techniques to focus on communication, self regulation, and skills of daily living.
Special Day Class - Social Communication (SDC-SC)
Students who may be served in this class require a focus on communication, emotional and physical regulation, and following directions. They may also be working on preacademic and / or academic skills.
Special Day Class - Social Communication - Intensive (SDC-SCI)
This class is geared toward students with intensive behavioral and communication needs who receive an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) - based program with Discrete Trial Training (DTT).
Related Services
The Individual Education Plan (IEP) Team may determine that related services are required for the student to access the educational program. These services may include, Speech & Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Counseling among others. Students may need them in addition to other services and may receive services in and out of the general education classroom.
